A History of my Thanksgivings

Thanksgiving used to be a big affair in our family with my grandmother cooking a huge meal to feed her 4 children's families. We'd all pack into her house, the grown-ups around the big dining room table and the kids in the living room at the kid table. She'd have her little decorations out - all store bought and autumn looking. It was so stuffy in there! I'm glad I got stuck at the kid table. When my grandparents sold their house, my aunt Liz took over the holiday, but that didn't stop Granny from making the feast again. And the kids didn't get stuck at a kids' table - we chose to eat in the living room (weird relatives do that to you). Then when Granny and Papa moved to Washington, we (my mother and us) sort of picked up the holiday because now we had a house to accomodate everyone. Me being the creative one, made all these decorations and centerpieces. Each year (since about 1994) I've had the guests make a turkey (you know like tracing a hand or using a toilet paper tube and construction paper). Me and my family have had some pretty wild Thanksgivings. A few years ago, my sister and I were the chefs. Now, no one told us that when you buy a turkey, they have all the innards(?) in baggies inside the bird.
We found that out when the bird was half baked. Actually we found one bag beforehand, but there were two. And someone forgot to thaw the bird so come 7 am we were working with one COLD bird. And I was the only one brave enough to go touching the dead bird. So I got stuck buttering it down. A few Thanksgivings back, my aunt came over, and we had a hoot weighing the bird and all on our bathroom scale. She had it dancing and everything. I really enjoy the food we have, too, cuz some people eat really WEIRD stuff. We don't do the crappy stuffing or the waxy sweet potatoes or yams. The grossest things we have is mincemeat pie and cranberry sauce. And sadly, since I was married, I've had to trade this holiday with the in-laws. Once again, this year, I'm going away with my husband's parents. Sob, sob, they're actually going out to eat. For Thanksgiving!! Thanksgiving is supposed to be home cooked meals! And his parents and grandmother are the only people who are gonna be there. Isn't Thanksgiving all about time with families? I miss my large lovely family screaming at each other over the holiday dinner. But my sister's due any day now and she doesn't want to be cooking 9 months pregnant or with a screaming newborn around.
To all in the US, Happy Thanksgiving!! If you don't celebrate (are from another country), I guess I'll say Happy Harvest!
